NATIONAL CULTURAL HERITAGE SIGHT - MICHAL COLLIERY

(Čs. armády Street, Ostrava-Michálkovice)

The only national cultural heritage site in Ostrava, the authentically preserved Michal Colliery with buildings dating from 1913-1915. The site still houses the most important exhibits from the Ostrava and Karviná collieries (the winding gear, main colliery building, machinery room, workshops, furnace room, sorting plant, shower area, lamp-rooms and offices). The exhibits include classic examples of heavy machine-industry (mostly built by the firm Siemens-Schuckert in 1912). The colliery was modernised in 1927, after which it was the most modern and progressive mining operation of its time.

The architect František Fiala (a pupil of the well-known founder of modern Viennese industrial architecture, Otto Wagner) contributed to the present-day appearance of the site.
